Optimization of the Wastewater Pressure Pipeline System in Haarlemmermeer

The Hoogheemraadschap van Rijnland sought a new arrangement for wastewater treatment in the Haarlemmermeer region due to the aging and wear of the Aalsmeer treatment facility.

This led to the project “Optimization of the Wastewater Pressure Pipeline System in Haarlemmermeer” (OPAH). This project includes the renovation and construction of new treatment plants, sewage pumping stations, and the installation of kilometers of new pressure pipelines to pump wastewater from households and businesses in the municipalities of Haarlemmermeer and Aalsmeer to the treatment facility in Zwaanshoek.

After research, it was found to be more efficient to pump the wastewater to the larger treatment plant in Zwaanshoek rather than renovating the old plant. This resulted in the installation of new pressure pipelines and the expansion of existing treatment facilities.

Tasks

The Hoogheemraadschap formulated a sustainable, progressive, and challenging set of tasks;

  • Sustainable pipeline systems
  • Precise construction time is essential, as the Aalsmeer wastewater treatment plant was taken out of operation
  • Solving practical bottlenecks
  • Minimizing traffic disruption during supply

Solution

Profilplast Pipesystems supplied 8,000 meters of HDPE piping and accessories. These included pipes in d800 and d630 sizes with SDR 17, 13.6, and 11. The material used, Simona’s PE100, is a high-quality virgin material. This specific virgin material is also listed by the PE100+ Association, which only includes tested and high-quality PE materials with a guaranteed proven lifespan.

PE100 piping systems are often used for wastewater transport due to the material’s chemical resistance, good hydraulic properties, and wear resistance. Additionally, PE100 is highly suitable for both above-ground and underground applications and has a long lifespan. Compared to other materials, PE100 offers an economically advantageous lifespan.

During supply, it was important to minimize traffic disruption. Profilplast Pipesystems achieved this through a custom solution and on-site guidance. In collaboration with GMB Civiel, Profilplast Pipesystems, Simona, and the municipality of Haarlemmermeer, traffic disruption during pipeline installation was satisfactorily limited. This resulted in optimal efficiency in just-in-time (JIT) unloading at busy points and during special time slots.

One of the challenges of this project was to realize many 2D bends in a short time. These bends were necessary to create an efficient pipeline system. This is not a standard product. Collaboration between Profilplast Pipesystems and Simona ultimately led to the creation of these custom-made bends specifically for this project.

Project OPAH has been successfully completed to full satisfaction. The new approach makes management easier for Rijnland and enables much more cost-efficient operations.
