Efficient Drainage of Bridges with POLO-ECO plus PREMIUM

A crucial aspect of bridge design is drainage. Proper drainage of rainwater enhances traffic safety and extends the lifespan of a bridge. This priority was also evident in the construction of the A11, where 11 new viaducts and a drawbridge were built. It was a significant project that implemented an innovative drainage solution.

For the first time in Belgium, POLO-ECO plus PREMIUM PP pipes were used for draining rainwater from bridges and viaducts. The POLO-ECO plus PREMIUM requires fewer brackets due to its longitudinal stability. This sustainable solution has also been successfully applied to bridge and viaduct drainage in Germany and Austria.

From spring 2014 to fall 2017, the A11 was constructed. This new highway connects the N31 in Bruges and the N49 in Westkapelle. The A11, spanning a total length of 12 kilometers with 11 viaducts and 1 drawbridge, ensures a faster and safer connection to and from the Port of Bruges.

The Project

For the plastic piping network and accessories, which play a crucial role in the efficient drainage of the viaducts and drawbridge, the joint venture of Jan De Nul & Franki collaborated with Profilplast Pipesystems. The drainage project for the A11 to Bruges includes 1,215 meters of PP POLO-ECO plus PREMIUM pipes with diameters of Ø400, Ø315, Ø250, and Ø200, along with fittings and suspension brackets.

The PP POLO-ECO plus PREMIUM ensures easy installation, high durability, and improved longitudinal stability. This results in fewer brackets needed, reduced installation time, and significant cost savings. The exceptionally high ring stiffness and longitudinal stability are achieved through 3-layer technology, making the pipe resistant to UV radiation, external pressure, and sagging.

The POLO-ECO plus PREMIUM piping system was chosen for its high longitudinal stability and visual improvement compared to standard materials like PE100. The pipes are light in color, blending well with the surroundings.
